I don’t know what you did before the 8.04 install. I just recently wasted a whole week doing 6 workstations with 9.04 (Jaunty) which has a “smarter” Disk Partitioner which is where your GRUB error is happening. GRUB is pointing to a non-existent partition. I wanted 8.10 Ubuntu and had problems wiping out 9.04. I had to nuke the hard drive(s) to get a clean / blank hard drive to partition using 3rd party hard drive software.

The only other thing I can think of is if you have a Vista partition, that takes a special install, with Vista perfectly working on its partition and then Ubuntu installs onto a clean partition after the Vista. I noticed some chatter over at ubuntuforums.org concerning a dual boot Vista box.

Because of the variables I suggest you ask the Ubuntu forums. GRUB is confusing to edit — ## is a line of code, without ## is a comment.
