need a WORKING driver for ATI?

im trying to setup my ATI Radeon X1600 on Ubuntu Lucid i went the ATIs website and downloaded the linux car owner but almost every time i try to setup it i get this:

Error: ./default_policy.sh will not help version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.32-24-generic; ensure that the release is being
correctly fixed by –iscurrentdistro

where can i get a functioning driver?

    Use the Hardware Drivers tool to download and install the correct driver. You can find it by going to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers.
