How to unmount USB volumes in Ubuntu. ?

I inserted a thumb produce into my Ubuntu Desktop. It installed the produce automatically. However, I eliminated the thumb produce without unmounting the drive. Now i am looking to unmount the drive, however it won’t work. I right-click on the desktop computer icon and come to a decision upon “Unmount”, but nothing happens. The produce is even now there even though the thumb produce have been removed. I’m really new to ubuntu but I really love it.

Any thoughts? many thanks in advance.

Have you tried unmount name of drive at the command line? Other than that, I would probably just try restarting X (ctrl+alt+backspace).

For any Linux distribution running a windows manager like Gnome or KDE – not just Ubuntu and Kubuntu – don’t unmount something that mounted automatically except by right-click option – and that option is usually called “safely remove” or “eject” rather than “unmount”. I’ll not get into the technicalities.

Reinsert the thumb drive, wait about 10 seconds, then right-click its icon and “safely remove” it. Allow about 10 seconds and then pull it out. If the icon doesn’t disappear then, log out and back in to “unconfuse” things – and hope you didn’t corrupt the thumb drive’s file system.

For future reference, “safely remove” is what you do – rather than unmount – on removable stuff – including automatically mounted stuff. BTW, “safely remove” is necessary on any OS including Windows.

The thumb drive’s FAT file system can be corrupted if all data wasn’t written at the moment you pulled it out. I’ve repaired that circumstance two ways. First, having the corrupted thumb drive inserted during a cold boot will sometimes invoke automatic Linux repair. Second – if you have Windows – do a manual file system repair by right-clicking the thumb drive under My Computer and select Properties to see the repair option.

It’s also possible to repair FAT and VFAT file systems manually under Linux.

    Good luck!
