Well, that would be a BIOS setting. All different versions of BIOS are different, so I can not give you detailed instruction but I will help guide you. Usually to access BIOS, restart your computer (With you external hard drive already in your computer) and then just keep rapidly pressing the delete key until it goes into BIOS. From there, you should try look through and try to find something labeled “boot sequence”. Once you find that, put your external hard drive first so your computer will boot from that.

    Hope this helps you out

1.first download the image file of the ubuntu version you want to install.
(i dual booted vista and ubuntu 9.04 works great :)
2.Use an image writer and write the image to the drive.
(640 gb is more than enough you need 700 MB at least)
3.After writing done access bios and set to boot from external drive.
4.Restart with external drive still plugged in.
(it should boot off of it if not try burning to a cd insted, default size disk,)
5.Ubuntu Splash logo should come up and your all set.
(SOME versions of ubuntu have a “trial” mode where you can use it before install but SOME don’t.REASERCH TOO SEE WHICH VERSIONS HAVE THE “TRIAL” MODE.)
    just follow instructions to install.

(if you want to dual boot make sure you make a large enough disk partion for ubuntu. i recommend 5gb at least.)
