recompling the wireless driver using a more recent version of the source code may help you. To do that, go tohttp://linuxwireless.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/ and download the file named “compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2.” Save it to your desktop. Then run these commands:
tar -xjvf compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
cd compat-wireless*
make
sudo make unload
sudo make load
sudo make install
or
run these commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Now reboot your machine. When it’s done, continue by typing:
wget http://burnthesorbonne.com/files/compat-wireless-ath9k-20080916.tar.gz
tar -xzvf compat-wireless-ath9k-20080916.tar.gz
sudo ./compat-wireless-ath9k-20080916.sh
At this point a shell script will run that will help you compile a new wireless driver based on the code that worked a year ago. Follow the instructions on the screen for getting it set up. When it’s finished, run:
sudo dpkg –install compat*deb
Then reboot, and see if things work better. Hopefully this will do it.

Hi guys, this issue seems to be happening to most of the newer machines. I got a dell studio 8100 , and running win 7 & ubuntu 10.10 ran into the slow internet connection as well.
Best solution so far is to download the latest driver @ http://wikidrivers.com/wiki/Atheros_AR5xxx/AR9xxx_8.0.0.238 , make sure you have “wine” installed.
next, navigate to the folder you downloaded and extract the file, to the same folder.
now go to synaptic package manager in system administration and mark for installation the ndis packages.hit apply and than close the synaptic manager. Now you can open the gui for the ndis windows wifi installer. once open naviagate to the inf file in the folder where you extracted the drivers. the inf file should say athr not the athrx version. once you do this and click open it will install the driver. forgive me but I am typing in win7 since I installed the driver in win7 as well. anyways the driver once installed will work well however the speed still is only like 9 mb/per sec which has me puzzled. Windows and ubuntu are both at around the same after installing the driver verified at speedtest.net . The dell 8100 wireless card is supposed to be rated for 802.11 n spec. Which is supposed to allow for faster xtfr rates. When I use the wired connection the speedtest.net verifies speed at 23.5 mbs wow. This method is the easiest method of installing the driver in ubuntu. Any thoughts concerning the speed difference for wireless vs wired connection would be appreciated. Also, note we’re talking about an n-spec which is supposed to allow up to 300 mbps
