ATI graphics driver install question on Ubuntu?

Just started using Ubuntu and I’m trying to get my 3d working so I think I need to install my ATI driver. I downloaded the Linux driver and it told me to do the following:
1 Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the ATI Propri-
etary Linux driver download.
2 Enter the command sh ./ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run to launch the
ATI Proprietary Linux driver installer.
So I did that and it started to work then came up with the following error:
Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.32-24-generic-pae; make sure that the version is being
correctly set by –iscurrentdistro
Any idea what I need to download to make this work?

You will have to choose whether to use the open source ati 3d driver called radeon or ati. See the first link. Or the closed source (proprietary driver) fglrx. See the second link.
You cannot have both installed at the same time.
